Dementia Accessible Cinema: Calamity Jane
Join us for a dementia-accessible film screening of the whip cracking Calamity Jane – a relaxed and welcoming cinema experience designed with those living with dementia, their families, and carers in mind.
Starring Doris Day as the titular gun-toting, wild west whirlwind, Calamity Jane is a classic Golden Age musical. Deadwood City, deep in Dakota territory, is largely the abode of men. But Calamity Jane is as hard-riding, boastful and handy with a gun as any; a blowhard frontier scout with an itchy trigger finger and a big mouth.
Doors open at 12pm for tea, coffee and cake (available for a donation), with the film starting at 1pm. Enjoy classic favourites in a calm environment where the lights are slightly up, the volume is gentle, and you're free to move around or talk if needed. Each film will have an interval to provide a movement and comfort break. We will have additional staff and signage available to help you, and there is an accessible route into the studio.
Everyone is welcome – whether you're living with dementia, caring for someone who is, or simply want to enjoy a classic film in a friendly, understanding space.
